Subject Leader – Mrs McNichol

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. (National Curriculum 2014)

At Myrtle Park we seek to provide an education in which children enjoy and succeed in their learning of Mathematics.  We believe that children need to understand fully the concepts they are being taught, not just how to get the right answers, and that the use of visual models and images and concrete resources to show this is a key strategy.  We aim to provide a curriculum that helps children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and become competent in mental and written calculations.  Secure knowledge of number facts, bonds and multiplication tables are essential for this.  We aim to provide children with the ability to reason in a logical way and to apply mathematics in a range of problem solving ways.  We want to help children see the links between maths and other subjects and deepen their understanding through investigations and application of maths across the curriculum.

Maths teaching takes place every day and a range of different teaching styles and strategies are employed. Work is differentiated to meet the children’s needs and regular assessment takes place to track their progress and understanding. Our calculation policy shows clearly how each strand of written calculation is modelled to the children and how mental strategies can also be used.  The classroom environment is used to enhance children’s learning and enjoyment.

In keeping with our school aims there are high expectations within the learning of maths; our learning is applied in real life situations and develops skills for life; maths is fun, leading to confidence and success, thus creating happy memories.  We all work together to make learning maths at Myrtle Park the place to be!
