Location knowledge has a prominent place in the new curriculum. At Key Stage 1 pupils are expected to name and locate the world’s continents and oceans and the countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom. At Key Stage 2 pupils are expected to locate the world’s countries, identify the position and understand the significance of latitude and longtitude. They also should be able to name and locate cities of the United Kingdom.
Increased focus on geographical knowledge as opposed to an investigative approach:
KS1: Name continents and home countries
KS1:Compare local geography to UK & World
KS1: Introduce key geographical vocabulary
KS2: Locate world countries; UK cities and regions
KS2 Identify world features, e.g. poles, tropics etc
KS2 Comparison study in Americas and Europe
KS2 Study climate, vegetation belts, land use, natural resources & trade links
KS2 Use compass points & 6-figure grid references
